I guess I didn't explain it well.

I did offer the Boston dealer 20K for the car, which he turned down without making a counter offer. This was after 2 days of contact - me asking for the Iris report from the salesman, and then being passed over to the sales manager (guy with the power, I suppose). Originally offered him 19K when he was asking 20.9K - he said we weren't even close. So I politely asked him what he would take for the car. He replied with 20.7K - a big $200 reduction. I then offered him 20K, which he said he couldn't take, and that was that. He told me he'd be in the rest of the day.

I wasn't inclined to see if he would bargain any further at that point.

As somewhat of a contrast, when I asked the other salesman about the price, after politely observing that the car had been sitting aorund his lot for 9 months, he replied something to the effect of "Well, we can work with you on price, if you're interested in the car." This at least motivates me to go see it. There's a short list of things I would like to get with whichever Aero I end up buying: mud flaps, rear bridge spoiler, Saab roof racks, Hakka snow tires and 16 inch steel wheels. So, given the fact that the salesman knows that his parts department has some "adjustment" room on prices (they all do), this can also come into play.

I'll report back on Monday night.
