Any ECU that manages spark timing can theoretically adjust timing forward to take advantage of higher octane. There are physical limitations (valve size, cam profile, compression), but none of these are likely come into play on unmodified engines. Additionally, a computer controlled turbo allows for more flexibility in producing power. So yes, with a specific type of engine management program on an engine that is not at or near the physical limitations of power production (an advanced system like the T7, particularly on a turbo motor, could certainly fulfill this criteria), higher octane might be useful, but the general theory statements still hold.
The point of my post was to assist folks in understanding how octane affects power production in engines - the particular Saab engine in question, in stock form, may indeed be capable of utilizing higher octane fuel to good advantage (to a point), but it cannot defy the limitations of basic engine theory.
