You are regurgitating the conventional wisdom premium and regular have the same amount of energy and therefore premium can't produce better fuel economy.
Ahh, but the magical Trionic Engine Management System seems to defy chemistry by optimally tuning the engine to make it more efficient and produce more power or better fuel economy.
It's one thing for an engine to prevent detonation with engine management. Saab Trionic optimizes other engine factors such as boost which adds a set of varibles not accounted for by conventional chemistry or engine theories.
No scientific studies done on this, but many folks on these BB's, including me, notice better mileage on premium. Now I'm not saying that's not a placebo effect, could be, which is what makes the fuel economy gadget business a good one as when you pay attention to fuel economy it generally improves all by itself, but it can also be explained by the Trionic actually making a boosted engine more effeicient and hence more economical with fuel.
I hadn't heard the cooler DIC theory.
