1. Thermal expansion of gasoline is order of magnitude smaller than needed to explain this effect (it requires temperature change of roughly 100F to cause 1% change in volume). I observe about 10% error in the MPG reading.
2. I doubt there is a dedicated fuel flow sensor for the MPG gauge since I am not aware about any other application for it (most other cars definetely do not use it; on the other hand, SAABs are not like other cars).
3. I do not think the amount of fuel sprayed from injectors is always accurate. It probably varies from injector to injector, from one grade/source of fuel to another, etc. In fact, the computer runs in a closed loop and relies on O2 sensor instead to derive the length of injector pulse.
There maybe be a source of error in that the tank was filled to possibly two different "full" levels. I tried to minimize this by using the same pump and topping off until 3 cut-offs. I am going to continue doing the same tests so eventually this source of error should cancel out.
The pump flow sensor is probably accurate enough since it is calibrated and sealed by the state.
