I'm from exactly the opposite planet, been 30 years since I've owned a domestic. Dunno' what brand you're used to, but likely there's lots out there for $17k that's less than 4 years old. $17k is the strippee ad price for an Accord/Camry/Malibu.

Any interest in competitive cars to the 9-5? Have you seen what you get in a BMW 525 or an E320 for $17k?

Never has it ever been so safe to buy a car as unique as a Saab. Consumer Reports actually recommends a 9-5 and JD Powers gives Saabs above average marks. So the adventure of buying a Saab doesn't have the reliability and service issues it once did. And your astonishment about $17k for a 4 year old Saab shows Saab resale is pretty mainstream too.

Are you ready to live a little? A Saab 9-5 gets you into the European car club cheaply and uniquely.
