This is actually my second european car. I've had 17 other "domestic" cars and trucks (including 4 my wife primarily drove). And I can say without reservation that I've enjoyed this car more than any of the cars I've owned, and probably the trucks too.

The 9-5 is just fun to be in. It's more nimble and responsive than any American car I've had, provides an understated luxury that appeals to my taste, and has an unpretentious practicality designed into it. Come to think of it, maybe it's my appreciation for practicality that make me enjoy my old pickup so much.

But beyond that, it's obvious to me that this car was designed by intelligent people who took a lot of pride in what they produced. I can tell that by looking at it, and I know that from my wife's involvement with the 9-5 development team in the mid 90s. I didn't know what a Saab was until a couple of Saab engineers joined us for dinner on a couple of evenings back then.

Just look at the the way the trunk is hinged for instance. Then go look at a Ford, or GM, Cadillac, or Lincoln.

Where else are you going to find a lightweight 4 cly 2.3L motor that can put out up to 250hp and 275 pound feet of torque? That's almost as much as my pick-up which produces 300hp and 350 foot pounds torque.

Where else will you find a car that produces that much power and still get 22-31 miles/gallon?

And do all that for 200,000 miles?

This car has not one, but two counter rotating balance shafts.

It uses the spark plugs to sense ionization in the combustion chamber to adjust timing and dwell.

You mentioned Mopar...did you know the 4 cyl engine is a "hemi"?

And they've mated it to one of the most reliable automatic transmissions in the industry.

All in all, I think the Saab is one of the most underrated, overlooked bargains in the marketplace. For those independent-minded souls who like knowing they got a better vehicle for less money than their more status-consious neighbors, this is the car to buy.
