What I Meant to Ask

I think we got derailed into a general discussion of the practicalities of carrying a spare DIC. That's not what I meant to ask.
What I want to know is this: is there a "normal" life span for a DIC. A tire, for example, might go bad early because of a road hazard, but it has a normally expected life span. Same with spark plugs and timing chains, all of which have expected life spans. What about a DIC? Is there a point at which one should be changed merely because it's old?
I decided about 80,000 miles ago that I wasn't going to be paranoid. Now, however, I'm asking a question about prudence, not doom and gloom.
Thanks for the responses. More please.
