No, I am not sure if time and temperature are independent variables!
There are resins in the coil wraps that are polymeric, and polymers break down under high temperatures. The longer these are hot, the statistically greater the chance of degradation.
I don't know if a finned exchanger on top would help, or not. I have never measured how hot it gets in the DIC slot in the block, but it certainly depends on the external temperature, the ability of the coolant system to reject heat from the engine, and the engine r.p.m. Since the hot end is buried deep, we would still have to get the heat from there through the DIC body up to the top to get to the fins. This would be a really good second-year engineering school project, don't you think?
All of this is conjecture - if someone actually took apart DIC's, they could probably figure out the exact cause (coil, chip, etc.). But is this a good use of engineering investigation time, if the design works well for millions of engine revolutions in all kinds of weather for years, and would any upgrade be cost effective?
I keep thinking how fragile the old sets of points, rotors and distributor caps were in my previous cars. The DIC was a leap ahead, and still is.
No doom and gloom here, Mike!
