Re: Still considering... Posted by NP [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Good idea to buy a used 9-5, all things considered?, NP ![]() |
Thanks for all the comments so far! I'm still debating the purchase, and your feedback helps a lot.
It may be that I sold myself on the merits and features of the 9-5 before I could really evaluate the car firsthand. I have certain criteria for my next car: needs to be a wagon or hatchback; needs to get good gas mileage; needs to be comfortable for longer trips; needs to be safe; should provide a degree of fun-to-drive; must have character. Saabs, particularly the 9-5, meet those criteria. I love the dash layout of the 9-5, and the comfort of the seats. I'm 6 ft., and have had trouble getting comfortable in cars with sunroofs--not so with Saabs! I really feel like I'm behind the wheel of a special car.
I haven't done as much research on the 9-3, but I more or less ruled it out based size, reliability, and price. It's fun to drive, but it is CRAMPED, especially in the footwells. The rear seats have negligable legroom--if only they could slide back! From what I've read, the 9-3 is even more of a reliability risk, and there are questions of build quality. The 9-3's I've seen listed in my area of the Midwest are not much cheaper than used 9-5's.
Comparing used car values, I've found that there are few, if any, cars in the sub-$9000 price range that are as nice and as well designed as the 9-5. It would be a great deal if not for the risk of high maintenance. If I were to buy this particular vehicle, there wouldn't be any way to get a warranty. The Saab dealership nearest by turned into a Toyota dealer, so I'm doubtful of how many chances I would get to find a CPO Saab. I would try to negotiate on the price, hopefully getting down closer to $8000. Also, the seller used regular gas in the car, which may account for less than peak performance.
How much would it cost to fix the SID? And how can you tell if the car has premium sound (i.e. logos or number of speakers)? I could use that info in the negotiations.
Thanks for all the advice, and please keep it coming!
