heat more than anything else, it is much hotter and less air space under the hood of a modern auto. As a result of discharge/recharge the lead plates of a battery build up a coating of sulfur compound over time (sulfination, I believe is the name) but at a certain high temp point this process is greatly accelerated. And today's battieries are more compact with plates a bit closer, so shorting out can occur more readily, hence sudden death syndrome.
So on the average, what last longer in a Saab, the battery or the DI ?
