I think it depends on your particular set of needs. I will not buy off brand tires, but will run H or T rated tires. On my 1999 9-5, which has a soft suspension and I do not drive appressively, I run Pirelli Centuratos, which have a milage rating of either 80 or 85k, and I expect to see 65K of life. For 50k miles they have been quiet, dependable and did well in the lighter snows typical of the Denver area. If the rubber has hardened in 2.5 yrs of ownership, I cannot tell any difference.
On my wife's 2004 9-5 ARC, the OEM are the Pirellis V rated I believe. These handle well, but make way more noise than my car, and will likely need replacement at 25K. But these tires are a better match for this cars suspension,.....and her driving habits, lol.
So there are trade offs, I prefer a higher mileage quieter tire on my 9-5, and I believe that many folks will run a performance tire down to or below the minimum tread depth (2/32)due to the rapid wear. Check out the tire sites and you will see a safe recommnendation for tread depth of 4/32 for rain, 6/32 for use in snow. The larger percentage of accidents occur in wet or snowy weather, so I believe a safe tread depth is every bit as critical to safe tire performance, particularily on wet pavement.
