The fuel pressure regulator has several functions, primarily to regulate the fuel pressure in the injector manifold and to bleed back to the tank all fuel not required in excess of demand. If the diaphragm ruptures the fuel pressure is not regulated and fuel returns to the tank via the overpressure return hose. When the power to the pump is off the fuel simply drains out of the manifold and supply line. Because little resistance is offered by the pressure regulator and a large volume is returned to the tank it requires much greater time to establish a usable head pressure in the manifold. The pump has approximately 3 times the required fuel delivery quantity at idle and maxes out at about 6000 rpm full throttle with a good regulator.ie.there is little or no fuel flowing back to the tank. If you drive quite fast it is possible to run a leaner mixture because of the bleed-off at the regulator You may even notice an improved fuel utilization. Changing the regulator is a simple task.
