I bought new a 1986 9000 turbo, and while I loved driving it, I absolutely hated the amount of trouble it was. Oil leaks, electrical problems, fragile transmission, rattles, poor A/C, marginal cooling system, on and on. The local service advisor knew me by my first name. My experience was so bad, I didn't consider owning another Saab for 15 years.
If that is what you consider a real Saab, you can keep them.
On the other hand, I have nothing bad to say about my 9-5 Aero--it has very similar driving dynamics as the 9000, but without all the troublesome failures. The only things I miss from the 9000 are the usefulness of the hatchback and a slightly larger rear seat.
Whether you like GM or not, Saabs have been improved under their ownership.
Wasn't there a Saab executive in the 80's who was quoted saying that they weren't building cars, they were building expensive toys?
