Parameters that need to be considered:
1) Finding a Dealer who has actually sold a car through the European Delivery program. Here in the Detroit area I went to three Dealerships before I found a salesperson who had experience with the program. There are unique forms and documents the Salesperson needs to submit, and some are time dependent I believe.
2) You have to Pay In Full for the car 30 days prior to your predetermined pick-up date in Sweden. Since you typically won't yet have a VIN by this time, financing options are nearly non-existant. No sales incentives apply.
3) It takes 4 to 6 weeks for your car to arrive at your local Dealer after you drop it off at the Docks in Europe.
In summary, you order your new 9-5 on June 1st, select August 1st for delivery, pay cash for the car on July 1st, pick it up at the factory on Aug 1st, drop it off at the docks on Aug 8th after a one week vacation in Europe, and finally take delivery of your new car a second time (at your local Dealer) in mid to late September.
The above example is only hypothetical since most European companies have extended mandatory vacation periods during the summer months.
It is a great oportunity to combine a planned vacation in Europe with a planned new car purchase, and save money too. I am not so sure it is a great way to just buy a car.
