As below, the only real drawback is the timing. Note as well that we are approaching sort of a black hole for IDS. Once the order books are closed for the 2006 model year, and I think they are now closed, it's hard (or impossible) to place an order until SaabUSA sets the pricing for 2007 models.
It's not really necessary to find an experienced dealer, although it might help. The necessary forms are self explanitory and relatively simple. You need a passport number, I think, for the order, and the usual other information, plus pickup and dropoff locations.
The timing of the travel assistance check seems more related to when you pay for the car rather than when you are picking it up. Or at least, when the dealer lets IDS know that you paid. I received mine 3 1\2 weeks prior, but paid for the car a week and a half early. Also, it looks to me like they build the car as soon as they can, rather than shoot for a just-in-time delivery. I say this because I placed my order last December, as soon as we booked our flight, and my VIN number ends in 008049 (convertible). Since they build something over 20,000 CVs per year, that says it wasn't made in May, but in January. And has been sitting ever since. Oh well, at least the paint will be fully cured when I get it home.
I am in Italy now, and in two weeks and a day-and-a-half (not that anyone is counting) I will step onto the tarmac at Gothenburg City Airport and then on to the Delivery Center. Look for my story in NINES Magazine!
