The color is normal, but, uhm, yes, the same mechanisms that darken the oil will ultimately lead to sludge. 5000 mile/6 month oil change intervals with preferably full synthetic, but even synthetic blend, will generally prevent sludge. Additives in the oil keep the little black particles in suspension. When the additives are used up, the black particles coalesce into hard carbon grains and precipitate out on the engine walls and pickup screen. Also, make certain that the PCV system is up to date and working properly.
