Interesting. The data at car-safety.org indicates that the tether is primarily for forward-facing (attach behind rear seat to top of car seat). They indicate there are a limited number of rear-facing car seat models that can use the tether as ChuckD did. Just shows how important it is to read the instructions for both the car and the seat. And get it checked.
I was using a base with removeable carrier (aka pumpkin). The base was rock-solid with belt only. Big fireman no move.
