I had exact same situation with '99 and now on 3rd kid so here's my the scoop. my car didnt have LATCH or even Tethers. it could not be retro for LATCH but the tether mounts are already there (for Canada cars) under the rear dash. you can DIY in a few hours. you have to remove the rear deck but not so bad. call corp Saab. they will send you FREE tethers with instructions(tell them you need all 3 - L/R/center). also...tell them you want the armrest belt. it wraps around the center armrest so it doesnt fall out for rear facing center child seats!! all FREE. takes a few days in the mail. meanwhile, use L/R positions, not center of course until you have the belt for armrest. your 2000 might already have the tethers. 1999 did not. tethers are for foward facing later though. no LATCH so use the metal belt locks that come with childseats to lock the seat belt into not sliding loose. follow instructions in childseat manual of course. I also recommend a seat protector. on leather, towels slide too much. but towels underneath help prevent leather stretching marks from really tight childseat installs (tighter the safer). towel at rear on seat folded couple times. then rubber mat or childseat protector (Babies R Us sells them in different colors and they protect the bottom and back for later larger childseats too.

they dont slide on the leather either which is good. using the seatbelts and locks are a PAIN esp if you ever have to move them from car to car. get extra locks and leave in the final places in both cars so dont have to reset every time. you really have to put your weight into it to get the seats tight enough whether using LATCH or seatbelts/locks. PLEASE use the locks. I see SO many people that dont!!! what are they thinking!!!?? the seatbelt is just loose and in accident the childseat will fly and flop all around. one last thing we used is something called a Mighty-Tite Car Seat Belt Tighener. man this thing really saves you from the nightmare of finding that perfect lock spot. install the seatbelt lock but can have the belt loose for easy install. then put on the ratchet on the belt near the doorside. then, just ratchet it down real tight. although child seat manufacturers will not "condone" the use of these. but since Babies R Us has been selling them for over 4 years now, I imagine no law suits pending on injuries claimed by them being unsafe. they are made well. I have 2.
