How often is completely up to you, the driver. They don't evaporate by themselves. Many times, I think, people (and I'm speaking generally) will be moving up from a smaller, less powerful, and less refined car and suddenly find themselves burning through brakes like never before because they are driving much faster and braking much harder. Other people might be putting a lot of highway miles on their car and brakes subsequently last forever.

I am approaching 50K on my Aero Wagon (mixed city and highway) with plenty of pad left. Note however that I switched pads at 5K to EBC Green, which may have longer life than the OEM Saab pads at the time (That said, when I did swap pads, the OE pads with 5K on them were actually thicker than the brand new EBC. Not a sign of rapid pad wear from the Saab OEs).

BTW, if your car is an '06, then you have the Akebono ceramic fiber reinforced pads which are supposed to be both longer lived and easier on the rotors than the previous Saab OE.
