It is absolutly no set rule for how long the brakes last since it purely comes down to driving style and where you live (up on a hill or not).
Front rotors can usually be resurfaced ones but many shops don't want to do that since they make more money selling rotors too.
With the new front pads from Saab (installed from 2005 and up) the rotors will last a lot longer.
Those pads can be installed on earlier 9-5s too.
Brakes are a great money maker for shops and easy to sell so many tend to suggest replacing them when they are only halfway worn.
When doing that on a regular basis, the owner gets the feeling that it is a short life span on the brakes when they in reality could have squeazed almost twice as many miles out of the old ones.
