If he's anything like me, it doesn't matter if it isn't noticeable to other people- it only matters if the driver/owner can see it. :^)
I've been very lucky so far... 4+ years with my car and not a single door ding. I also try to play the chess game in parking lots and park where it is least likely to occur. I have one small acorn mark on my hood from a tree I was parked under while working on a pc at the CEO's house. I know it will come out with a paintless dent repair so it no longer bothers me, and the steel gray color hides it well. And now I have one more thing to remember to avoid- parking under trees that have acorns!
If I would have had any kind of visual on that minivan as it left the lot I would have followed it from a slight distance, not breaking the speed limit of course, called the police while driving, and at least record the plate number. What you're talking about isn't a plain old accidental door ding. There would have to be some of your paint on the edge of his door. You're looking at damage which would reduce the trade-in or selling value of your car.
