With paintless dent repair they have special tools which they use to tap out the ding/minor dent from the back of the panel. Then they might do some tapping from the outside of the panel just to even things out. For the right small dent and if the paint is not broken, they can achieve perfection or close to it. Of course it also depends on the skill of the guy doing the repair, which of course also comes into play in a body shop. At least you're not getting an entire panel resprayed after the repair as would occur in a conventional body shop.
