If an engine becomes sludged it performs very poorly....or perhaps it doesn't perform at all. As a preventive measure, PCV upgrade #6 offers a greater promise of an engine that continues to perform versus one that doesn't.
In addition to the perform versus non-performance issue....the economics of replacing or repairing a sludged engine are known. A replacement engine cost may force you into replacing your 8 year old Saab.
I did the PCV #6 upgade on my 2000 9-5 Aero even though there was no sludge at 260K miles (I dropped the pan at 250K miles). Like you, I too believe in the mantra of preventive maintenance....it carried my 2000 9-5 Aero for 280K miles, with another 100K - 150K anticipated.
