Pulling the oil pan is really the best way to confirm the absence of sludge.
As an alternative you could put an oil pressure gauge on the engine and test at 2000 RPM after the engine is fully warmed up (20-30 minutes on the highway should do). A reading of 35-40 PSI is where you want to be. A lower reading could indicate developing sludge or a worn oil pump.
The bottom line is really adequate oil pressure. I had a dash-mounted digital oil pressure gauge with a warning light set to light up at 15 PSI and the factory oil pressure warning light (lights up at 6-8 PS) in my 2000 9-5....a more extreme approach.
