An answer, I always do my own Posted by Herb Hirsch [Email] ![]() ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Need Advice! DIY Rotating Tires. Stupid Question., joewayrn, Fri, 14 Dec 2007 08:42:47 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I've always rotated my own tires, every 5K miles....usually at the same time I'm doing the oil and filter. I did this for 280K miles on my last 2000 9-5 Aero.
I use a hydraulic floor jack under the front side jacking point on level ground; it raises the front and rear together. Then, I do a front to rear sway. Most tires I use are directional so cross-rotating is a no-no. And no, I don't use the jack stands I have because I'm not getting under the car. However, I do use a compressor and impact wrench....that really saves time. In tightening, I use the 3rd of 4 settings on the impact wrench...then, I carefully check for 90 ft/lbs with a torque wrench.
I like doing my own tire rotation because it gives me an opportunity to check many other things at the same time. Eg.: inspection for tire inflation, nails, cuts and buldges, brake rotor and pads, struts and shocks for leakage, constant velocity and universal joints for cover rupture, exhaust system for leaks, etc.
Finally, if YOU check with a torque wrench YOU will KNOW that it will be possible to remove the wheel in the middle of nowhere. I had a tire installer make them so tight that I had to go to a shop to loosen the nuts....and I had a guy put the nuts on hand tight so 3 fell into the hubcap on a 20 mile ride to work.
Saving $20 0r $40 is not even on the list.
