The worst features of the 9-5 platform were compromises built in from the start. Rear seat room is limited by the platform, which is basically for a car smaller than the 9-5 needs to be. Side impact standards (Saab standards, not legislative standards) were met by installing very thick doors, resulting in a narrow interior for the size of the car. This is because the platform can't carry curtain airbags.

The chassis doesn't hold the latest GM engines, and at this stage of the game, GM has no interest in dumping the money and effort necessary to do so. The 2.0 engine (in direct injection form as found in the Pontiac Solstice and Chevy HHR SS) has as much power as the 9-5s 2.3, with less noise, less vibration, lighter weight, and more reliability.

The handling, as compared to the more modern "Epsilon" platform with Saab's own tuning, is not very lively. Styling is from another century.

But most of all, sales volume in the USA is horrible. They're selling well under 500 a month. The antedeluvian 9-7 sells better.
