Ouch! Sorry to hear that. Same thing happened just happened to my 2000 9-5 - except, apparently, without engine damage (although perhaps some wear that could have been avoided). I posted recently about this regarding my sludge concern. Oil light started to come on for a fraction of a second a few times during my regular 10-minute commute; once it came full on with engine warning lamp at a stop, then both immediately went off again. This all happened over a few days; I stopped driving and had car towed to Scandinavian in Rockville MD. I feared sludge - but diagnosis was extremely low oil due to extremely high crankcase pressure that had, probably, forced oil out around seals, etc. -- as has been discussed extensively on this board. Oil pressure switch okay. PCV update a must and being done - shop thinks this will be the fix, but obviously I will monitor and bring the car back reasonably soon for another look see. Like you, I had checked my oil not long ago - perhaps a month (150 miles or so), and it read just about full on the stick. But when the car arrived at the shop the oil level wasn't even registering on the stick. If I had been just a little more on the ball I could have had this looked at long ago - I had noticed occasional puffs of smoke from tailpipe that now are obvious warning signs. I only aspire to being a DIY mechanic (no time), but I do pay attention to this board. For what it's worth, it seems to me that anyone with affected models/years should be doing the PCV mod because it looks like a problem that can sneak up on you and kill your engine while you're still wondering what's going on. On the bright side, the fact that I've rescued my car with a relatively small investment means I'm recommitted to loving care and, hopefully, putting another 100K on it (it's only at 65K now).
