The flickering oil light WAS telling you something... It should have gone to a Saab mechanic then. When it was on steady, even running the motor at idle is doing damage. This applies to any and ALL internal combustion engines, not just Saabs.
Saab doesn't put in oil pressure gauges because by and large the system is reliable, and a pressure gauge that truly reflects the oil pressure would drive the average car buyer nuts. This is the same reason that since the NG900, the temp gauge is factory set to have a large "normal" band of temperature. With "standard" gauges that vary normally, like a C900 or 9000, owners would be in the shop if it was a little down (cold day) or a little high (warm day). Putting in the "buffer" kept those nuisance "repairs" down (and yes, it saves Saab and the dealer money, but it allows the shops to do work that is really needed).
Granted, there are some of us who understand that not everything in an internal combustion engine operates at a steady state, but we are in the decided minority. The "normal band" of the temp gauge can be programmed out with Tech 2, and one can always install an oil pressure gauge into the car.
