YOu might be under the mistaken opinion that just because he is the chief designer, he singlehandedly determines what the cars will look like. This is far from the way it works.Besides,if you do not care for the Smart car, perhaps it is because it is nothing more than a little shitbox, and no amount of good styling will change that. I know that's how I feel about it.
The chief stylist is given direction by virtually all other players in a car's design team, including the bean counters, who are there to make sure that a design can be produced, and done within budget. Focus groups are put together to gauge consumers trends towards various design elements, and a lot of factors come ito play that are responsible for the overall shape of a product. The designer is certainly highly responsible for specific lines and esthetic ideas, like what kind of finishes to apply to materials, where crease lines should be to enhance other proportions, and things like that, but the product planners are really the ones who form the overall idea of what the vehicle should represent, and the designer is the pilot in command who puts in in play. It is unfair to Mr. Mauer to hold him totally responsible for those esthetic ideas that we do not like right now. By the way, while at Mercedes, he turned out some beautiful cars as well as the Smart.
My original reaction to the 9-X was, this is Saab's Aztek. The 9-3 X is a big improvement, even though it does not fit my personal needs as a two door.Wait till you see the new 9-3. You will like it. Go easy on him till then.
