Again, this is a concept car, and not necesesarilly meant to imply that it in it's entirety would go into production. Often times, on cars like this, what the marketing folks are looking for is reaction to the overall idea, or perhaps to different material uses and finishes, but knowing full well in advance that the total product as shown would not be practical. One such example on the 9X is the fact that the two roof panels that fold inward and store vertically along the sides of the rear wheel wells both take up valuable space inside, and also would admit rain or snow residue to the interior if folded in when not bone dry. these are the type of things that gawkers at auto shows do not notice, and the artsy fartsy designers have trouble relating to, but things that would not escape the scrutiny of the product planners and engineers who would have to make the overall concept work. There are probably a ton of other details that are not worked out on this concept( and every other one out there), but at this stage, it doesn't matter. They just want a thumbs up or thumbs down vote from potential buyers.
In my opinion, the 9-3X looks a lot closer to being producible than the 9-X. If only I could find all of these so called OFF ROAD places where you need 20 inch wheels and knobby tires, maybe I could figure out why anyone needs something like this.
