After holind out myself, but owning all the other models (classic 900, 9000, ng600, and still a couple 9-3s) I would have to say the 9-5 is far more prone to expensive, hard to diagnose issues, especially in the 4cyl models. I never thought I'd like a 6 in a saab, but the 02 and up V6 cars are much more reliable according to the best saab mechanics. THey say this reluctantly because, as purists its just not the same.
Still, do a search for the usual, and very frequently used expensive keywords like: SLUDGE, DIC, TCS, and SMOKE. If you can't be absolutely certain of your prospective car's maintenance history, and get some kind of guarantee, walk away and don't look back. There simply is no such thing as a bargain 9-5. I, and many others here have found this out the hard and expensive way. We all love our cars of course, but now we're buried in them dinancially....
In contrast, my remaning two 9-3's, both 02's and one a Viggen, seem to have been much more reliable, faster, and easier to work on. They aren't as comfortable, refined, or cushy of course. But they also aren't as heavy, get better MPG, and I worry a lot less about them.
Not to sound overly negative, but I've stuck with Saab for a long, long time. Even through the early GM years when things seemed bleak. But until I bought my last cars and this 9-5, I didn't see how truly little they care about backing their products and the service network in some areas of the country. I'll likely wait for the new AWD saabs before thinking of buying new. To me, its simply to great a risk to buy a newer, used saab with a less than ironclad guarantee on it.
