I know it's right at the maximum. The trailer has electric brakes, so stopping is under control. Of course, the torque load is mass (weight) times acceleration plus drag (plus gravity on uphill runs), so I limit acceleration and shift down to multiply engine torque. Remember, these cars will run continuously at 140+ mph in Germany, so running 60 mph in fourth is hardly a risk to the engine. And so long as the transmission is locked up, there's no greater load than the car can demonstratively handle.
All I ask, is why does it work one way sometimes, and another way at other times. I don't think temperature is an issue, b/c the way it behaves is consistent from a cold start until I stop. It's just not consistent from one time to the next.
And btw it never "jolts." It always shifts smoothly.
