Just did a round trip to Cincinnati (from Canton) in a 9-5 Aero Wagon. Woulda averaged 34 mpg going down at an economical, mostly law abiding pace. A side excursion to an outlet shopping mall *just off the highway* for Mrs. G chopped a half MPG off the SID average! Creeping through parking lots probably is costing as much as what you buy when you're there! ;-)
Driving home in the rain dropped the mpg to 30. I've seen this before - those water splats on the front of the car add tremendously to the drag. Plowing through snow is far worse for mileage.
Driving in hot weather is far more economical than in the cold. The fluids and greases are less viscous. The air is less dense for reduced air resistance. Reduced air density also means the throttle plate is open a bit more for lower pumping losses.
