See, that is part of the problem in today's society. If EVERYONE slowed down to the speed limit (to conserve fuel), then going with the "flow of traffic" wouldn't be so bad and you wouldn't fear being run over. If you stay in the right travel lane, people will either have to slow down or pass you.
I've changed the way I drive over the last year and a half. I used to drive at 75-80mph in my gas-guzzling SUVs (one averaged 9mpg) in the left lane. Then it dropped to 70-75mph. Today, I commute to work around 62-65mph with the cruise control set. Guess what? It doesn't take me much longer to get to work, I'm less stressed due to the retards in the left lane (yeah, tailgating at 80mph is REAL SAFE), and I am using less fuel.
If everyone started to conserve their fuel, the overall demand would decrease and most likely bring the price back down a bit. But nooo, we Americans are too ignorant of the factors that we could change- instead, we just complain about and say "There's nothing we can do".
Sorry, I'll get off the soapbox now.
