I wish you the best here....but I think you have a lot to cover.
Technically, SAAB does not have to do anything, especially since we're at ~ 90 days past the end of the CPO warranty.
The second owner's email is nice, but the true letter of the sludge law according to SAAB is receipts, receipts, receipts....
If it were me, I'd pull the valve cover and peek inside to see signs of sludge (or not). It's the most inexpensive and easiest/quickest for you to see what may be going on. Take some pictures while you have the valve cover off and post them here....you'll get tons of advice on your engine's condition.
Then you'll have better information at hand whether to do #1 or #2 in your choice list.
