I recently replaced my timing chain. If you have not already done so you should check the chain tensioner to verify that the chain is stretched. I think beyond 14mm is recommend to replace, but if the chain is noisy you have a problem irrespective.
I pulled the oil pan and saw maybe 20% of the oil screen blocked with debris - everything else was reasonably clean, so I'm not convinced that blockage caused my problem.
I did the chain myself and did not have to replace guides or the balance chains, although the balance chains are a little more noisier than when new.
All else seems fine with my engine - but to do the job by the "book" the engine would need to be pulled and everything replaced. Mine's a 1999 with 120k miles and I did not want to dump $ 2k into the thing as from my perspective it's a decent but certainly not a great car.
Never hurts to pull the pan though for peace of mind,
