No, it is not just that type of tire that is noisy.
On my two 9-5 SW (MY99 and MY05), I can get feathering and uneven wear on the inner edges of the rear, because of the way that camber (adjustable) and toe (not really adjustable) are set, especially under load. I discussed this under some recent postings here on the 9-5 board.
Some wagons, especially Steve's, seem to have a combination fault with the rear subframe member that make the inner side wear much worse.
The way that i cope is to rotate front to back about every 6 to 8 km, which is about every four months, and in particular before a long trip like a holiday at full load.
The compromise in the design made by SAAB engineers is to give better handling under typical conditions. The independent rear suspension does have its limits (check the handbook, wagon supplement, which shows maximum permissible load as 4 times 70 kg passengers (280 kg), plus 80 kg luggage compartment, under curb weight conditions, gives 360 kg. Considering that I also have Thule carriers on the roof of each SW, it is easy for me to get to the maximum load. One year, I actually measured it - 325 kg, including wife, kids, luggage etc. When loaded like that, I put the pressure at 38 psi in the rear, and rotate them when I get back (about 5000 km
I run exactly the same tires on both cars, National Ovation P215/55R16 93H, which are made by Yokohama, and they seem to be good in our milder southern Ontario winters, and also okay to travel into Quebec snowstorms. But they aren't snow tires!
Salut de Toronto, bonne 400ieme!
