Remember the 9-3 cat converter is not sitting directly under the oil pan baking it with 1600 deg F. This is why the 9-5 design is so piss-poor. A turbo puts enough stress on the oil but the heat from that cat is really bad for the oil, especially as you say if the car spends a lot of time in traffic. I agree with you that 5000 with full syn should be fine and I will also stretch that to 7500 in long highway driving.
