They are not alone, Volvo has mad it a pain in the rear since about 00 and up when the 5 speed "filled for life" AW transmission was introduced.
BMW has had this intricate system where you remove a fluid level plug from under the car and fill the transmission through that hole until it comes out and MB has recently discontinued the dip stick in favor of some expensive tool to check the level.
I guess it is ok being a dealer mechanic since they don't have to change the fluid but for us trying to make it last a little bit longer, it sure makes the big services a lot harder to do.
Just trying to get a funnel down there to fill it up is a trick in itself.
