On a 1997 Honda Passport I recently gave my son - there is neither a dipstick to check tranny fluid nor is there a drain cock on the radiator. so to drain the radiator you have to lossen the lower hose.
To check the transmission fluid or add fluid you take a plug out (overfill plug) and add fluid until it just starts to run out - the key thing is the fluid temperature for accuracy
So I think it may be something the Japanese started - and they seem to know what they are doing, but I do miss a radiator drain plug.
