What do you mean? We do Transmission services all the time. Not all people out of warrenty go to independent shops.

You mentioned BMW. some of the BMW engines don't even have dipsticks. They use a level sensor and computer to determine the engine oil level.
Also the SAAB 6spd auto uses a large drain plug with a smaller plug in the middle of it. The large plug has a tube goin up into the trans like the BMW trans you mentioned. Although SAAB did include a seperate fill plug . So you fill up the trans. Run it to a certain temp and then remove the smaller center plug on the large drain plug. If there is too much oil, it will drain out. If there's not enough oil, nothing will come out of the small drain plug, so you have to add more oil.
I guess auto engineers just like to find a way to make our lives more difficult

As for funnels to get to the fill plugs. There is a special SAAB tool. All it is, is a short funnel with a flexible tube connected to it. It does make it a lot easier to fill.
