I do most of my driving locally...gas mileage consistently runs 20 mpg.
Highway driving typically yields 26-28 mpg.
A long trip with the cruise control and a light load will generally result in 29-32 mpg.
Light load refers to a couple of things.
1. NOTHING on the roof (eg. bikes, roof rack, etc.)
2. Low weight in the trunk. A packed trunk and a couple of porkers
in the car will destroy your hope for 29-32 mpg; this will then
drop to the mid-20s.
Like you, I'm not ecstatic about the mpg. Although I've had Saab's since 1967 I'm seriously thinking of getting a Audi A3 TDI....30 mpg city and 42 mpg on the highway. Since I retired my auto needs have changed; previously, my driving was 50K miles/year...90% Interstate and 10% local. That has dropped to 15K miles/year...completely reversed to 10% highway and 90% local.
