R&R'd Thermostat & temp sensor Posted by Larry West [Email] (#1140) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Larry West) on Sun, 29 Nov 2009 20:04:38 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Took some time yesterday to remove & replace the thermostat on my 154k 1999 LPT, along with the engine temp sensor. The problem was very long warm-up times, evidenced by the temp gauge staying below the "normal" zone much, much longer than it should, and poor cabin heat, especially when coming off a highway run.
Other than needing to get into some awkward positions, and having to feel my way along sometimes, it was pretty straightforward.
There's really no extra disassembly required on this particular model. I didn't take the air inlet pipe off, as I could see or feel my way to the two 10mm bolts, and the 2 13mm bolts with ease. The only tricky part was loosening the one bolt on the thermostat cover that is closer to the center of the car. Too many things in the way to get a straight shot at it with the ratchet & extension, and there are some things in the area that I'd rather not hit and break (like the brake reservoir) when the bolt breaks loose. But all worked well, and it came apart with no problems.
And it went together just as easily.
I replaced the engine temp sensor because it was inexpensive, and it has probably been there for 154k. Very easy change, one just needs a 19mm deep socket.
Topped up with 50/50 Zerex G-05 coolant/distilled water mix.
Car warms up much more quickly now, and the temp gauge performance is as expected. The gauge on my car is set up as it was from the factory. I don't plan to change that, other than perhaps tightening up the "normal" zone.
Also replaced a small vacuum line that appeared to have fallen off a nipple on the throttle body, near the base. I'm not sure if I had just knocked it off when I pulled the plastic cover off, or what, but it's back on now. More monitoring on my 350 mile trip home in the morning.
