Now that I have had time to think of my mistake I fear the same. The engine never ran after playing with the cams (cranked but no ignition). I took the cams off to replace the lifters. Dont think I ever heard any alarming sounds. My hope is that cranking the engine with the starter may not have messed with the valves? Today I realized to check compression, and if I am only getting a little, maybe the timing is off and the valves are opening at the wrong time? If I get no compression, bigger problems I guess!!!
No resistance is the question. It does seem to crank faster and steadier than I would expect, but when by hand I still feel a definite thump as the cylinders approach tdc and then a release when they start to come back. Not sure if this is pressure building and releasing or if its mechanical. seems like taking a compression test would be my next option.
