Replaced wood dash and lights...long Posted by GFW3pedals [Email] ![]() ![]() |
Just a note for those considering the task. My wood dash panel was oddly faded, like it was baked in the sun for weeks, the rest of the car including the leather is pristine, so I don't understand how it got to look so bad. Also replaced the broken piece around the shifter, cig light, auto lock light, some ACC lights. Still have to tackle the seat heater lights, will try the Radio Shack route, if that fails I'll have to go for the 7.00 dollar replacements. From searching posts they are nearly impossible to find elsewhere, even though I know that there are probably dozens of applications that use the same bulb, we just don't know who what and where. Anyway it's really not that bad of a job. A thin blade screwdriver,an old butter knife with a slight bend on the tip and a stainless steel ruler helped pop out the ACC/SID and light panel. Some say to remove the fuse panel, DO NOT..it is not necessary. Removing the steering wheel covers and the signal stalks IS, even though you might not think so, like I did. Neat design how the levers just unplug, no need to disconnect the wires. Of course I dropped one of the torx screws inside somewhere never to be found again forever. I would recommend stuffing a towel inside the dash to catch falling screws, but I was tight on time and took the chance. I was able to find a machine screw to take its place just fine. One note when doing the final pull on the dash I didn't need to be too carefull as I was junking the old unit, but overall it came out without too much trouble and if you were re-using yours you should be able to do it without damageing it. It helped a lot to have a replacement right there so I knew exactly where the spring clip resistance points were. It's quite a sight when it's all opened up, a huge hole where there used to be a dash with parts placed all over the inside of the car in the back seat etc. My girl took one look and turned white as a ghost, of course I offered to work on her 9-3 when I was done, she said no thanks. Be methodical and make sure everthing you disconnected gets reconnected. It looks fantastic now, no cracks or discoloring, all lights work including the reman SID. Bye for now.
