You are right, buying a new car to get better mileage is always false economy, even if you pay cash. Depreciation alone will offset any gas savings. A used VW diesel to use just for the commute might be an exception, if you get one cheap enough. But then you have another car to insure.

LesH had the best suggestion, most other suggestions will only add fractions of mpg.

Calculate the actual mpg rather than trusting your trip computer. It varies a lot and part of that variation is the mpg you are getting in the last few miles. Going to the metro area, we lose about 1,000 feet elevation in 15 miles. A few days ago the display said we could go 31 miles on the gas remaining. After that 15 miles, it still said we could go over 30 miles. The earlier calculation was influenced by the drive up the hill that my wife had made the day before from the local small town, gaining 750 feet in 4 miles .
