Brake pads and bleeding.....questions Posted by MI-Roger [Email] ![]() ![]() |
I have replaced rotors and pads on a number of cars, inlcuding my 9-5 numerous times, but have never replaced fluid or bled the brakes. Each time I needed this done the car was in for other service and I added it to the list of work for the Techs. The local Saab Indy only charges $45 for replaicng the fluid and bleeding, cheap if your car is on their hoist for another reason.
Anyways, I intend to replace the pads on Friday and a brake fluid change is past due. My intended plan is as follows:
1) Use a turkey baster to remove most/all of the old fluid from the brake resevoir and replace with fresh DOT4 fluid.
2) Starting with the Left Front wheel (as per the WIS bleeding sequence) remove the wheel/tire, crack the bleeder port, compress the piston to squeeze out the old fluid behind the piston, then close the bleeder and swap in the new pads.
3) Fill my new Motive Products Pressure Bleeder with DOT4, connect to resevoir, pressurize the tank, then crack the bleeder on the LF caliper and bleed out all the dirty fluid in that line. Close bleeder, re-install tire/wheel, drop car to the ground, release pressure on Pressure Bleeder tank, re-fill resevoir/Pressure Bleeder as necessary.
4) Repeat steps #2 and #3 three more times, working my way around the car using the bleeding sequence from the WIS.
Does this sound correct? Is there an easier way (without having a hoist)?
Thanks,
