Well after writing the dealer's president, as I got tired of the service guy forgetting I was alive, I got a call from the service guy this morning. Although I know I have the option of just getting the head gasket replaced for a "mere" $3,200, If I were to get the engine replaced for $5,200, yes, I'd wind up with a new engine oil cooler ($1,200 down the toilet as they just replaced that a few weeks ago) and that I would get a new turbo (had that replaced about 12 mo. ago for $2,000). This has nothing to do with the fact that a new timing belt is just around the corner.
I could be wrong, but I somehow think that, had they done what they said they were going to do and looked over the car prior to replacing the engine oil cooler, they would have realized that the head gasket needed replacement. It's not like one is in front of the car and the other is in the rear. So I believe they actually threw away $1,200 of my hard-earned money, with a devil-may-care attitude at a time when I could least afford it.
I believe that I will have to write them off, if I can, since Saab repair places are becoming rarer and last week's news of Saab's bankruptcy can't help. But, for sure, I couldn't see them as a reliable service place, and as a result, not a reputable dealer either for either of the brands they sell.
