Yeah I wouldn't trust AutoZone or similar for a MAF, OEM is the best bet and not that expensive anyway. Of course not convenient if in a rush or stranded. Hopefully AutoZone will give you a refund.
I've grabbed a couple used mafs from the pick n pull which seem to be fine. I often keep one as a spare in the trunk on long trips along with a known good authentic dic, fluids, tools, and assorted other parts. Long trips in Canada outside of the Toronto - Montreal corredor have few if any resources for fixing 20 year old Saabs. I have btdt with classic 900's and basically treat these as vintage cars now even though they are fantastic on the highway, they are now all aging. In the USA, one can at least overnight parts from good sources, but it is always handy to have some parts right there in the trunk.
