There are definitely places where you can safely drive 90-100 mph in North America (I don't know about 140 though)

For example, I drove from Oklahoma City to Las Vegas once. Long stretches of I-40 have a speed limit of 75 mph (or was it higher, 85 mph maybe?), and there's absolutely no problem cruising at 100 mph there. I-40 between OK and AZ is pretty desolate, and the truckers pretty much keep to the right.

When I was in Toronto, Canada, I was surprised that a major east-west thoroughfare (hwy 401) had such a high average speed. Many people drive 90 mph on that hwy! There didn't seem to be any speed enforcement on the 401, but there are a lot of speed traps on the local roads. Torontonians seem to be pretty good drivers.

I heard Montana does not enforce a speed limit during daylight hours...

I was also surprised when I drove to Boston once. I think I was on the Mass Pike (I-90?)... when there's no traffic, people drive FAST on that road.

On another trip, driving through Tennessee, I was surprised to find that everyone was driving 90 mph. Even people with underpowered Toyota compact pickup trucks! Maybe it's all that NASCAR--it gets them pumped up? (heh)

The NJ Turnpike, especially below exit 5, has a decent average speed. Lane discipline on the NJ Tpke isn't too bad, either.

On the other hand, Northern Virginia has some pretty lousy drivers (NO lane discipline), as does Washington, DC (red lights don't mean anything there). Oh, and of course there's Florida, the "car accident capital of the world". Too many elderly folks and lost tourists, I suppose.
